NUFFIELD BURSARY APPLICATIONS 2013
The Nuffield Foundation is a charity with a long-standing interest in science, mathematics, and technology education. Bursaries enable students to take part in science or engineering based projects in industry or research institutions. The Scheme has been successfully run in Northern Ireland for the past ten years by SENTINUS.
The categories for Awards include:
1. astronomy/astrophysics 2. biochemistry 3. biology 4. biomedical sciences 5. chemistry 6. engineering/manufacturing
7. environmental 8. geology 9. mathematics/computing 10. physics 11. forensics 12. psychology
The main aim of the Scheme is to give students a chance to experience for themselves the reality of science and technology in practice, by spending 4 to 6 weeks on placement in a research or industrial environment. Students receive £80 per week for their placement (to cover the costs of travel etc).
On accepting an Award students are required to attend an Induction morning at QUB (Wednesday 25 May 2011), where they will meet their prospective project manager and find out more about the placement. On completion students attend a Celebration evening at QUB (Thursday 15 September), where they will have the opportunity to present their findings to their peers, teachers, parents and science educator. In addition they will be awarded a Gold Crest Award from the Royal Society for Science, which is worth 70 UCAS points.
Applications for Awards for Summer 2011 are now invited for submission to Mrs Monroe on or before Friday 17 December 2010. Four applications will be chosen by a panel of STEM teachers. References will be written by the teachers of each applicant before being put forward to SENTINUS for consideration. Students will hear of their success in being awarded a bursary during March/April 2011.
